To those standing in the gap between lost athletes and coaches on your campus and the God of the Universe,

Discipleship is a key concept necessary for spiritual movements to expand.  Simply understood, discipleship is the transferring of a worldview and subsequent way of living from one person to another.  A person who calls themselves a “disciple” acknowledges they are following someone or something for the purpose of learning and emulating.  So it’s safe to say that everyone is a disciple, but the question of who or what they are following is always TBD.

Jesus models the process of discipleship for us during his short physical stay on earth.  He called men to follow him, to learn from him, then to live what He said and did.  He spoke to the masses, but then spent quality “life” time with 12 chosen friends, and even more intense discussion time with 3 (Peter, James, John).  The plan was for him to leave and for them to take over “living” out what He taught them.  He was intentional to not do things alone; every moment became a precious opportunity to model the faith.

In the same way, as we follow Jesus as disciples, He wants us to invite others to follow us following Him!!  Not because you are a perfect Christian or always wisely demonstrate what it means to be a disciple, but because God in His grace wants to use YOU to join Him in producing more imperfect followers/disciples of Him.

So be intentional about doing ministry with those who will follow after you.  Who can you take to meet with a coach? Who should sit with you and watch as you share the gospel?  Who are the 1-3 persons you will discuss how the small group bible study went that day? Click here for some tips on what to do in one-on-one meetings with people and what to do in a small group.  And make sure you’ve always got another “disciple” along with you for the ride!!
